I've been tagged by Jennyfur, so here are my facts...

1. I am crazy about girls.

2. I have only ever had one girlfriend (in an on-and-off relationship totalling 1 year and 11 months if you subtract the offs).

3. I am a cat person, but am allergic to cats, so I have a dog.

4. I love insects because I think they're fascinating and beautiful (generally speaking).

5. My favorite kind of pie is rhubarb (with gooseberry as a close second).

6. I am terribly afraid of nurses and have had many nightmares about them.

I took a two month sabbatical from Deviantart, but now I'm back. I've added six deviations and over twenty scraps that I made during my time away, as well as some old works I found.

For easy access, here is an index of the various creatures I have created, or reinterpreted from folklore. It excludes those that have only appeared in a single work.

Introduction to My Art

Sun Mar 25, 2007, 12:39 AM
I’m not big on journals, but I thought I’d put up an artist’s statement or something of the sort. For starters, my name is Lee Sherman. I was born on the 13th anniversary of the Apollo 13’s safe return to Earth, and, around the time scientists found probable Martian microfossils in ALH84001, I pledged to become a science fiction author and artist like Wayne Douglas Barlowe. I recently graduated from the University of Iowa with a degree in art (minoring in English).

Today I’m pursuing separate avenues of writing and art, both dominated by science fiction. I also produce fantasy art and Surrealism (I, unlike most, regard these as 3 separate disciplines). Many of my works are “found art” based on stains and other random things that suggest interesting images to me. The end results mostly fit into one of several fictional universes, and I usually include concise explanations in the artist’s comments. I used to develop my art and writing in parallel, illustrating my stories and novels, but I no longer do that for various reasons. The stories behind my works of art are usually either afterthoughts or factors in the development of a visual idea, not the genesis of the idea itself.

Right now I’m working almost entirely in pencil, so that’s what you’ll see here. I’m picky about what I put in my main gallery, so most of my work is in “scraps.” The scraps are mostly pages from my sketchbook, since I usually execute planned and/or complicated drawings on printer paper. I discovered when I saw them side by side that my scans are of wildly varying lightness. I’ll try to keep that standardized from now on.

I hope you find my work pleasing and thought-provoking. Please leave comments, since I’m receiving almost none at this point.
